Backstop Standards

(a)

Backstops must be constructed using earthen berms, sandbags, or other materials capable of safely stopping the projectiles typically used in the sport shooting activities conducted at the range.

(b)

Backstops shall be a minimum of ten (10) feet in height, extend a minimum of ten (10) feet to the left and right of the target, and be constructed at an angle to ensure projectiles are directed downward or contained.

(c)

The municipality must inspect and approve all backstop designs before issuing a permit for the sport shooting range.

(d)

Backstops must be free of any material that could cause a ricochet, such as concrete or rocks.

(e)

The use of metal or exploding targets is strictly prohibited.
